Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

What is TESOL?

TESOL (also known as TEFL) is the acronym for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. Taking a TESOL course can be your passport to a world of ministry and adventure teaching English abroad. SIM has an increasing number of opportunities worldwide and with the immigrants in most neighborhoods here in the States for TESOL qualified teachers.

Why should we have an TESOL program at our church?

There are currently 33 million first generation immigrants living in this country. Many community college TESOL programs have long waiting lists and classes are often too full to give individual attention to students. TESOL in a church setting gives an opportunity for church members to teach students in a smaller classroom setting, to build relationships, and to help diverse peoples become comfortable in a church environment. In addition to helping improve the quality of their lives, it also may lead to an opportunity to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with these new Americans. America is a nation of immigrants and many of our ancestors went through the same adjustment process that current immigrants and refugees are experiencing.

Why do I need special training to teach English to Speakers of Other Languages?

TESOL is a specialized area of teaching that requires more than just knowledge of English. It involves developing cultural sensitivity, understanding how people learn a language, and special teaching techniques. This workshop addresses all of these issues.

Comments About the TESOL Training Workshop

“The manual format was well thought out and beneficial. I especially liked the examples used and the resource materials. Each speaker presented clear, concise materials and allowed for questions.”

“I loved the session on sharing the gospel on purpose. The practice lesson plan helped us feel like we can do this! The discussion on cultural differences was good—and the emphasis that we need to build friendships. Thanks so much for giving of yourselves and your time!”

"The seminar has been most helpful. I retired in order to serve God full time and this is a part of my calling, to teach TESOL classes. As a teacher, a high point was designing a lesson plan. More importantly, as a Christian, I am thrilled with the opportunity to witness to my faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Praise God!”
